“Yeungs & Wings Blues Thing”

Appalachian Power Park will host the first annual “Yeungs & Wings Blues Thing” on Sunday, September 13, 2009. The event, produced by the West Virginia Power and West Virginia Blues Society, will showcase one regional blues act and three national acts.
The Yeungs & Wings Blues Thing will feature the following:

Hubert Sumlin & The Nighthawks
Sumlin is a living guitar legend that grew up playing guitar with harmonica great James Cotton. He became Howlin’ Wolf’s lead guitarist in 1949 at the age of 18. Ranked ahead of guitar legends Derek Trucks, Angus Young, Neil Young, and Eddie Van Halen, Sumlin is 64th on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarists of All-Time. Sumlin has been cited as an inspiration and influence by Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Carlos Santana, John Mayer, Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Rolling Stones and countless others. He’s a Blues Music Hall of Famer.

The Nighthawks have entertained audiences all over the world for over 30 years with their unique blend of blues, rock, soul, R&B, rockabilly and swing. They’ve played along side legends that include Muddy Waters, BB King, Greg Allman, Pinetop Perkins, John Lee Hooker and others.

Super Chikan & The Fighting Cocks
James “Super Chikan” Johnson grew up on farms in the Mississippi Delta where his fondness of Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, and farm-raised chickens inspired the development of the Blues Music Awards’ 1998 Best New Artist Award Nominee. Art Tipaldi, Senior Editor for Blues Revue and BluesWax, said “Chikan has internalized the deepest music that hangs in the air every day. As ambassador for the Delta blues, there is a happiness and joy that comes through in everything he plays.”

Zac Harmon
The Jackson, Mississippi, native is a true disciple of the music that emanated from the city’s historic Farish Street district. His 2002 release Live at Babe & Ricky’s Inn won Harmon the Blues Foundation’s prestigious International Blues Challenge title of “Best Unsigned Band.” His follow-up album garnered major national airplay and he was voted “Best New Blues Artist” in the inaugural XM Nation Music Awards and the “Best New Artist Debut” by the Blues Music Awards. The Blues Revue magazine has identified Zac as “one of 10 artists that represent the future of the blues.”

The Catch Blues Band
The Catch Blues Band, based in Wheeling, WV, is the tri-state’s hardest working blues band and known for their edgy Classic Southern Rock and Blues sound. The band’s music encompasses several genres, including jazz, reggae, and the blues, as well as good old-American Rock and Roll.

Looking For Blues Talent

The West Virginia Blues Society will hold its Third Annual Blues Competition on October 3, 2009 at Christopher's Banquet Center in Fairmont, WV. Blues bands and solo/duo blues acts will compete for cash prizes and WVBS sponsorship to the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge held every year in Memphis, Tennessee.

The West Virginia Blues Society will have 18 competition slots filled by regional blues acts from all over West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and other states. As the competition grows, so does the level of talent. If your band has the Mojo this could be your ticket to Memphis for the Big Show. This is the ONLY Blues Talent Competition in West Virginia recognized by the Blues Foundation. So, tune up and show up with your best Blues.

While the competition cannot be considered a purely “amateur” contest, the goal of The International Blues Challenge is to seek out the best “undiscovered” Blues band and the best “undiscovered” solo/duo Blues performer in the United State and beyond. The IBC is a real opportunity for discovery to musicians that are truly unknown and unsigned to a record company.

The International Blues Challenge in Memphis is restricted to acts representing an affiliated organization of the Blues Foundation, of which WVBS is one. The IBC is the largest gathering of blues bands in the world (around 150) and has evolved into the Nation’s most respected showcase for Blues musicians ready to take their act to the national stage. Each affiliate of The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band and a solo/duo act to represent the organization at the IBC Semi-Finals on world famous Beale Street in Memphis. The list of blues greats that have competed in the IBC over the years is impressive indeed: Slick Ballinger, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro, Albert Cummings, Delta Moon, Larry Gardner, Dianna Greenleaf, Zac Harmon, Richard Johnston, Matthew Skoller, Susan Tedeschi, John Weston and Michelle Wilson. Musicians from around the world have commented that just getting the chance to play on historic Beale Street is worth the trip.

The first-place winner of Blues Competition will receive $750 dollars in cash and WVBS sponsorship to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in early 2010, where they can gain valuable exposure to record label A&R representatives Blues industry professionals, and festival promoters capable of providing real career advancement for a serious blues musician. The second place winner will receive $200 in cash and third-place winner will receive $100 in cash. The big winners, however, are the Blues fans who enjoy a day of Blues entertainment.

Winners at The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, the city considered by many as the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll, receive cash and prizes such as professional consultations and assistance, gigs at some of the country’s best festivals, interviews in the world’s leading Blues publications, free website design and hosting, and even a slot on the “2011 Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise."

CONTACT PERSON FOR COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS: Complete information, application & rules are available online at www.wvbluessociety.org. Deadline for application submission is September 1, 2009.

For more information contact Competition Director, Jack Rice at 304-389-1438 or e-mail: bkravenhawk@hotmail.com
